Default Weight Loss for Teens

This can be a very challenging thing if your teen is over-weight and you try to help them to lose the weight and get in better shape. Teens already are rather self-conscious about their appearance and any attempt to get them to lose weight and get in shape might cause them to think badly of themselves. Weight loss for teens is pretty tricky, but you can help them if you go about it in the right way. The best way to go about it is to make it not about them, but about the whole family as a unit. Make it known that everybody in the family is going to cut back on the bad foods and start eating healthier. As the parent and the one who does the grocery shopping you are in control of what type of foods are in the house. If the high calorie, sugar coated, high cholesterol stuff isnt in the fridge or cabinets, they cant eat it.

The trick to the whole weight loss for teens is to help them understand that if they dont watch the foods they eat now, by the time they are adults it will be much harder for them to lose the weight and get in shape. You can make it a contest of sorts. Each person in the family weighs in and then you each set the appropriate goal; the weight you should be for your height and age. Then set the time limit; I would say three to five months, depending upon how much weight has to be lost. You dont want your teen to lose weight too quickly as that can be very unhealthy.

The next step in the weight loss for teens challenge is to get them active and away from the computer or game systems. Give them limits on how long they can watch TV, be on the computer, or play video games. Try to get them involved in outdoor activities as the weather permits. They will resist this, with a resounding “no way”, but if you want to get your teens on a healthier path, you have to be persistent. Offer to take them to places they would enjoy going, like the mall, the pool, the park, etc. These are all places that require physical activity that will help increase your teens metabolism and speed up the weight loss process. Your weight loss for teens process depends upon how devoted you are to seeing the desired results; its up to you to make sure they are sticking to the rules of the contest. You should keep a chart and weigh in weekly to see how well everybody is doing. Its important that they see that you are sticking to the rules as well; if you aren’t a good example and show results, they might give up on the contest and go back to their old bad habits.

If all goes well, as your teen begins to lose weight, he or she will become more active and have a better self-image of themselves. Weight loss for teens is not an easy process but it can be successful as long as you, the parent, are being a good example to them.

If your contest is successful and your teen has met the goal he or she set for themselves, reward them with a new outfit or two; they will need it because now the clothes they had are too big. Once the contest is over, dont stop there. Continue with providing healthy food, prompting them to exercise, and continue to praise and reward them for what they have accomplished. Your weight loss for teens program doesnt have to be a struggle as long as you keep them interested and help them see the benefits to a healthier life-style.
